Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements, 2nd ed., 2015

FROM THE PREFACE: The Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (the Code) establishes the ethical standard for the profession and provides a guide for nurses to use in ethical analysis and decision-making. The Code is nonnegotiable in any setting. It may be revised or amended only by formal processes established by the American Nurses Association (ANA). The Code arises from the long, distinguished, and enduring moral tradition of modern nursing in the United States. It is foundational to nursing theory, practice, and praxis in its expression of the values, virtues, and obligations that shape, guide, and inform nursing as a profession….

Nursing Informatics: Scope & Standards of Practice, 2nd ed., 2015

FROM THE INTRO: The American Nurses Association (ANA) identified nursing informatics as a nursing specialty in 1992. The first scope of practice statement for this specialty, Scope of Practice for Nursing Informatics, was published in 1994, followed by the 1995 release of an accompanying resource, Standards of Practice for Nursing Informatics. Those early publications were replaced in 2001 by the Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice, which combined both the scope and Standards of practice into one document and created an enhanced and more robust definition of nursing informatics to reflect the contemporary healthcare informatics environment. The 2008 Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice followed with a slightly revised specialty definition of nursing informatics and inclusion of an expanded presentation of competencies for the informatics nurse and informatics nurse specialist….

Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice, 3rd ed., 2015

FROM THE OVERVIEW: Registered nurses practicing in the United States have two contemporary professional resources that inform their thinking and decision-making and guide their practice. First, the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (American Nurses Association, 2015) lists the nine succinct provisions and accompanying interpretive statements that establish the ethical framework for registered nurses’ practice across all roles, levels, and settings. Secondly, the 2015 Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, Third Edition, outlines the expectations of professional nursing practice. The scope of practice statement presents the framework and context of nursing practice and accompanies the standards of professional nursing practice and their associated competencies that identify the evidence of the standard of care….
