Red Book Online Special Alert – July 26, 2013

A survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, using the National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen), shows that human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine coverage levels in the US among adolescent girls 13-17 years of age did not change from 2011 to 2012 despite steady increases each year from 2007 to 2011.In 2012, all missed vaccine HPV vaccination opportunities accounted for 84.0%. Had these missed opportunities been eliminated, coverage with ?1 doses could have reached 92.6%. The top reasons surveyed parents gave for not planning to vaccinate their daughters included:

  • They didn’t believe the vaccine was needed
  • The vaccine was not recommended
  • They had concerns regarding the vaccine’s safety
  • They lacked knowledge about the vaccine or the disease
  • Their daughter was not sexually active

By increasing three-dose HPV vaccination to 80% coverage, an additional 53,000 (estimated) cases of cervical cancer could be prevented over the lifetime of those 12 years of age and older. Healthcare providers can help increase coverage by taking advantage of every healthcare encounter to assess every adolescent’s vaccination status.

See the full report in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).
